Points of importance for the
MC:
1.
Some of the flowers in these bouquets were grown by students on campus in the
Benson Greenhouse complex and Thomas E Ricks Gardens, by students in the
horticulture program under the supervision of Jerry Toll. Students in
various classes learn how to time the cultivation of crops for retail sales,
and we benefit from seeing the results of their work. Even some of the
branches in the displays are grown in the gardens and harvested for this
show. Yes, you can grow beautiful flowers and plants even in Rexburg
Idaho!
2.
Sourcing of plant materials for an event like this requires weeks of
planning. People all over the world are involved in producing products
that are created for their beauty, and for us to enjoy. Some of the
flowers in today's show are brought from as far away as Thailand, Holland,
Israel, Italy, Ecuador, Colombia, Hawaii, California, and even Arco,
Idaho.
3.
We try to source products from local markets as much as possible, but because
of our harsh winters, we rely on growers in other parts of the world to provide
beautiful flowers. The floral industry is very conscious of potential
waste of energy and resources, and has one of the most efficient transportation
systems throughout the earth. Many of the products used in this event are
certified to be produced using safe, efficient, and energy conscious
practices.
4.
Last week several floral students and faculty travelled to the San Francisco
Flower Market, and hand selected some of the most beautiful floral products you
will see today in the displays. We hope you will enjoy looking at them in
close detail after the fashion show, while munching on some of the delightful
cookies produced by students in the Home and Family programs.
5.
The displays that are set up for your enjoyment after the fashion show are
following the theme of this year's production, hoping to turn your heart to the
past with reminders of floral fashion from previous generations. Imagine
what your mother's wedding bouquet looked like, or what the flowers would have
been designed in the early 1900's when your great grandparents were
married. We hope you will enjoy a nostalgic view of how flowers helped
celebrate some of life's most important events over the past century.
6.
In contrast to the flowers of the past that you will enjoy after the fashion
show, you will notice that many of the flowers, and bouquet styles on the
runway today are designed with a modern twist so you can see some of the lates
trends in floral fashion as well, coming from designers in Amsterdam, London,
and other floral fashion centers of the world.
7.
Some of the flowers in the show today came through the Flora Holland market in
Aalsmeer, The Netherlands (Holland) which is the largest commercial bulding in
the world. You could place over 200 football fields under one roof.
Imagine a building that would cover the entire city of Rexburg, filled with
flowers to be sent all over the world every week!
8.
While you are enjoying the open house after the fashion show, we hope you will
have a fun time taking photos with your friends, then post them on your
favorite social media #byuiflowerandbridal #ForgetMeNot or
#FashionandFloral
9.
The floral students constructed over 150 feet of fresh garland on Tuesday and
Wednesday evening this week. Custom garlands can really make an event
special. Please take the time to come to the runway and see the details
in this beautiful work!
10.
Because it is hard to see the details from the audience, the flowers used in
the runway fashion bouquets will be on display on tables during the open house
reception. We hope you enjoy seeing them close up.
11.
There are many people who get involved producing a show like this. We
hope you will take a moment and thank the many faculty and staff who you see
supervising, and all of the wonderful students who have worked so hard to bring
this bright energy together for this event.
12.
We hope this event will help set a theme of enthusiasm and creativity. We
encourage all of you sisters to enjoy the General Women's Meeting tonight at
6pm. where you will be blessed with inspiring messages.
